9 Tips to Improve Your Chances at Job Fairs

Job fairs are very competitive. You need to make the right moves to get the job you really want. If you’ve only just graduated from college, then it’s even tougher because you must be impressive to get that first job.

Research shows that around 48% of students graduate without jobs lined up after graduation. The rate increases each year. Things are made more difficult by the growing competitiveness of the job market, and the fact that the most aggressive people are the ones that win in a competition. It takes more than just competence to win, it also takes a level of aggression. Those who are serious about finding a job are the ones that truly seek out jobs, such as through jobs fair. By having a right approach you can get a great result from job hunting.

1. Go directly to the List
Once you step foot into the job fair, you should head straight to the list where you can find all the participating companies. Choose which companies interest you on the list. Instead of spending time and energy moving between the booths, find the right one for you from this list.

2. Do Some Homework
Use the listing sheet provided to check for job openings within your chosen company. You could use an available computer to research the companies as well.

3. Stay Calm, Energetic, and Enthusiastic
Work to make a great impression with any company representatives and let them know that you’re interested. Have a friendly chat with them about their company and prove what a great listener you are.

4. Approach Decision Makers
Approach the company hiring manager or a senior member of the team when you can. There could be a wealth of important information to be gleaned from recruiters and human resources workers about the company, but you want the hiring manager as they hold all the influence.

5. Don’t Sell Yourself Short Through The Interview
Talk up your strengths and what you could bring to the company during the interview. Companies are interested in what potential you have. Put together a small statement on your credentials. Don’t be too conceited about it though. You won’t need more than a few minutes. To succeed in an interview you must capture their interest.

6. Follow Up
Try to get the name of someone that you can contact about the interview. It’s better if you ask for their business card.

7. It’s Okay to be Redundant
When you follow up with a letter make sure that you include your resume in it even if you already gave it to them in the job fair. Attach two because you are addressing both human resources and the hiring manager. State that you met the representative already in the letter and that you had been interviewed in the job fair. Make another note of your strengths and potential and what you could contribute to the company.

8. Give Them a Call
One week would be more than enough time to give them a phone call to follow through. Take the chance to inquire about your application.

9. Don’t Limit Yourself
Don’t focus on just one single opportunity. Make use of the internet and do some research about other companies at the fair. Check to see if there are other openings in the company. This means you’ve done a good job of planning your job hunt.

Don’t forget how insanely competitive the job market is. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed by how many other people are applying for the job you are as well. Don’t let yourself be discouraged by not getting hired. Stay positive and use the experience to do better with the next application. You gain new information and contacts during a career fair that will come in handy later.
